Abstract

BeatMaker is a computational software system designed to aid in the pronunciation teaching of foreign languages (L2) by leveraging the power of speech prosody. It provides learners and educators with objective, visual, and quantifiable feedback on the rhythmic and intonational aspects of speech production. Purpose & Application The primary goal of BeatMaker is to bridge the gap between acoustic analysis and pedagogical practice by making complex prosodic information accessible. For Learners: Provides immediate visual feedback on the quality of their rhythm and intonation compared to a native speaker model, helping them identify and correct prosodic errors (e.g., incorrect stress, unnatural rhythm). For Educators: Offers a tool for objectively assessing a learner's prosodic competence, supporting targeted instruction on areas like syllable stress, word accent, and rhythmic grouping. Target Domain: Foreign Language (L2) pronunciation training, focusing on prosodic features (rhythm, intonation, accent). Core Functionality BeatMaker analyzes acoustic features to generate a visualization of the learner's prosodic performance. For more information, please access: Silva Jr., L. J. da. (2023).
