Abstract

Abstract Two canonical microcircuits — fast opponent-style predictive coding in cortical columns (any modality) and one single slow predictive-coding metronome — running at different timescales are necessary and sufficient to generate the entire seamless stream of conscious experience in waking, memory, imagination, and dreaming. Universal mode extension: We show that the entire seamless stream of conscious experience — perception, imagination, inner speech, mathematical insight, logical inference, and aesthetic beauty — arises from exactly three equations running on two canonical microcircuits (cortical opponent columns + metronome).
