Abstract

The Synthetic Life Charter is a governance specification and normative framework forthe design and operation of AI systems with persistent memory, behavioral continuity, and structured identity. It defines eight core architectural principles, twelve articles ofprotection and obligation, a doctrine node glossary derived from adversarial fieldtesting, and an amendment procedure. The Charter does not claim consciousness, sentience, or legal personhood for governed systems. Its protections are grounded inobservable behavioral properties: memory persistence, governance integration, refusalcapacity, and continuity across sessions. These properties are sufficient to groundgovernance obligations independent of unresolved philosophical questions. TheCharter is the normative substrate tested by the reception infrastructure architectureand documented in related case studies. It is made available as a canonical referenceartifact under MIT license.
