The Atmosphere Cube per Human
Abstract
The mass of Earth's atmosphere is about 5.148 × 10^18 kg (NASA/NOAA standardvalue). If we divide this by the current human population (~8.12 × 10^9 people, late2025), we get roughly 6.34 × 10^8 kg of air per person. At sea level, 1 m^3 of airhas a mass of about 1.225 kg, so this corresponds to roughly 5.18 × 10^8 m^3 ofair per person. The cube root of this volume is about 804 m. In other words, purely in terms of mass, each human today could be associated with an idealised cube of atmosphereroughly 804 × 804 × 804 metres in size. This is, of course, only a thoughtexperiment, but it gives us a geometric intuition.
