Abstract

This work reopens the enigmatic case of the dual high priesthood of Luke 3:2, where Annas and Caiaphas are both subsumed under the singular title of high priest in contradiction to the legal exclusivity of high-priestly incumbency. This ostensibly incongruous statement by Luke has led to a variety of interpretive solutions over the centuries, ultimately culminating in the popular consensus view that Caiaphas held the official title while Annas was the true high priest behind the scenes. However, lacking any evidentiary foundation, this explanation proves to be an ad hoc rationalization that doesn’t fare well under critical scrutiny. Viewed in its full historical context, Luke’s statement actually reveals a remarkably precise and intimate understanding of the era’s political landscape that is perfectly captured by his incisive articulation. By delving into the dynamics of Roman provincial administration and its impact on Jewish institutions, an obscure logistical reality emerges, providing a solution that is as historically robust as it is simple.
