Abstract

The origins of the zodiac’s twelve-fold structure remain incompletely explained by the historical record. The Babylonian MUL.APIN tablets (c. 1000 BCE) present a developed system of the zodiacal band with limited evidence of gradual development from the textual record alone, and the equal thirty-degree division appears only in the procedure texts of the fifth century BCE. Egyptian decans and Indian nakshatra represent parallel traditions that share structural features without being derivable from one another. This paper proposes a geo-mythological hypothesis: that the Awash River’s paleogeomorphology in the Afar Depression of Ethiopia provided a terrestrial template for a twelve-fold counting tradition, the river’s twelve major paleo-meander bends constituting near-uniform thirty-degree azimuthal steps across a course of approximately 1,223 kilometres. The central claim is not that the Ptolemaic equal-sector zodiac originated in the Awash basin, but that a twelve-fold counting system — twelve lunar months, twelve seasonal stations, twelve ecologically distinct landscape zones in sequence — was available to be observed in the Awash corridor, and may have contributed to the pre-Ptolemaic counting tradition that the Babylonian and Egyptian systems subsequently formalised. Each bend carries a dominant ecological and landform signature that corresponds structurally to the canonical symbol associated with the relevant sector. The geomorphological and ecological correspondences are presented as the primary evidence. Stellar alignment calculations are presented as recomputed reference data and not as a dating result, the alignment test requiring anchor bearings that are declared for future publication. The paper proposes systematic archaeoastronomical survey of the Awash basin as the most direct test of the hypothesis, and specifies the null models that would refute it.
