Abstract

AbstractMetaphors such as the fitness landscape have played a central role in evolutionary biology, but their static, point-based imagery obscures connectivity, history, and human entanglement. This article develops the concept of fitness riverscapes as an extension of the landscape family of metaphors. In a fitness riverscape, lineages are depicted as rivers and channels flowing over an underlying hospitability surface, niches appear as drainage basins, and organisms, including humans, are treated as geomorphic agents that carve, dam, and reroute channels. Drawing on work in adaptive landscapes, fitness seascapes, niche construction, metapopulation theory, riverscape ecology, and social–ecological systems, I introduce a working vocabulary that includes primary floodplains, deep puddle lineages, restless rivers, stranded puddles, evaporation probability, trophic incision, and the Anthropochannel. I then apply this vocabulary to three clusters of problems: trophic structure, fragmentation and extinction risk, and human driven global change, arguing that fitness riverscapes provide an emotionally resonant cognitive map for thinking about “fitness global warming.” Finally, I propose fitness riverscapes as a semiotic and pedagogical tool for teaching evolution and conservation, and as a boundary object for policy and governance discussions. The goal is not to replace formal models, but to enrich the conceptual toolkit through which researchers, students, and decision makers reason about vulnerability, connectivity, and responsibility in an Anthropocene world. fitness riverscapes, adaptive landscapes, riverscape ecology, niche construction, science education AI collaborator statementThis work was developed in sustained collaboration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT (GPT-5.1 Thinking), which served as a structural refiner (proposing and revising the overall organization of the framework), a stress-tester (probing for inconsistencies, gaps, and failure modes), and a stylistic drafter (producing initial text later edited and curated by the human author).
