Abstract

The first ecumenical council, held in Nicaea – an ancient city located within the modern Turkish city of İznik – in 325, played a very crucial role in the formulation of this statement of our faith. According to CCC 195, “The Niceno Constantinopolitan or Nicene Creed draws its great authority from the fact that it stems from the first two ecumenical Councils (in 325 and 381). It remains common to all the great Churches of both East and West to this day.” As the Jubilee Year 2025, which began on 24 December 2024, concludes with the closing of the Holy Doors of St. Peter’s Basilica on 6 January 2026, the Catholic Church also concludes the yearlong reflection on Nicaea, which took place side by side with the Jubilee Year.
