Quality Criteria for Futures Research: Beyond Traditional Metrics
Abstract
The concept of quality has gained prominence in interdisciplinary research evaluation. It necessitates assessment frameworks that extend beyond traditional bibliometric indicators and rankings to encompass broader societal contributions, ethical dimensions, and long-term impact. In futures research, high-quality outputs cannot emerge if evaluators and researchers rely solely on conventional metrics. Given the inherent uncertainties of the field, pluralistic futures, and emphasis on transformative foresight, appropriately customized criteria are needed for the reliable assessments of foresight outputs. This study synthesizes recent advances in research quality debates and proposes a pluralistic, context-dependent framework tailored to futures studies. It outlines eight key criteria through a non-hierarchical constellation model. The paper further provides a refined definition of quality in futures research and practical tools, such as case study applications and an evaluation checklist. These contributions offer conceptual clarity and actionable guidelines to enhance the foresight profession by elevating professional standards, empowering trust, promoting inclusive practices, and amplifying meaningful societal influence.
