Abstract

Delivering drugs through the skin is an effective method for a variety of therapeutic agents, and emulgels are increasingly being explored as an innovative and promising formulation option. These advanced systems effectively merge the advantageous properties of emulsions and gels, with numerous studies highlighting their enhanced skin penetration capabilities. The dual composition of emulgels enables efficient delivery of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs, addressing the limitations commonly associated with traditional topical formulations. Reducing the size of emulsion globules through nanonization and micronization can significantly improve stability and extend the duration of emulgel half-life. In addition, wide range of benefits linked to emulgels highlights their strong potential as an optimal system for topical drug delivery. This article presents a comprehensive overview of emulgels, detailing their fundamental components, standard formulation techniques, evaluation parameters, and future prospects, while also highlighting notable marketed products that emphasize their increasing relevance in contemporary dermatological practice.
