Abstract

Acute toxic conditions, precipitating from accidental poisoning, pharmaceutical overdoses, or chemical exposures, represent a critical global health challenge requiring rapid intervention. While contemporary pharmacology has developed sophisticated organic antidotes for specific receptors, mineral-based formulations—ranging from non-specific adsorbents like activated charcoal and clays to specific ion-exchangers like Prussian Blue—remain the cornerstone of emergency toxicological management. This article critically evaluates the therapeutic efficacy, mechanisms, and formulation science of these inorganic agents. It details the role of gastrointestinal decontamination via adsorption, the interruption of enterohepatic circulation, and the chemical neutralization of systemic toxins. Furthermore, the review addresses the physicochemical constraints of these formulations, such as surface area, porosity, and suspension stability, alongside clinical protocols for their safe administration. The discussion highlights the indispensability of these cost-effective mineral agents in both resource-rich and resource-limited healthcare settings.
