Abstract

This study provides a category-theoretic analysis of the Japanese onomatopoeia "donburako" from the Momotarō folktale. Phonemic decomposition reveals that this seven-mora word corresponds to seven distinct functor operations (⊗*_○, ∞, F_⟳, ⊣_•, Ker_○, colim, Ker_○), mathematically describing the physical process of an object falling into water and being carried by waves. Unlike other flow-related mimetics that use only two repeated operations (e.g., "pukapuka," "zabubabu"), "donburako" employs seven different operations, creating the meaning of "flowing chaotically yet naturally." This operational diversity directly corresponds to physical complexity. Our findings demonstrate that the sound-meaning relationship in Japanese mimetics is not arbitrary butmathematically determined, challenging Saussure's principle of arbitrariness and offering new insights into sound symbolism. Co-written by Viorazu. and Claude ( Sonnet 4.5, Anthropic)共著:Viorazu. & Claude( Sonnet 4.5、Anthropic)
