Abstract

This paper addresses a central paradox of contemporary development: while material comfort and technological capacity continue to expand, social pressure, insecurity, and systemic fragility do not decline accordingly. Rather than treating these outcomes as unintended side effects of economic growth, the paper argues that they arise from the internal dynamics of modernization itself. It proposes the concept of a modernization loop, defined as a self-reinforcing feedback structure in which efforts to expand production, convenience, and efficiency simultaneously generate new ecological, social, and systemic pressures, prompting further technological and institutional interventions. Drawing on insights from development studies, risk society theory, and ecological economics, the analysis shows that social burdens are not eliminated but displaced and restructured, particularly under conditions of digital modernization and tightening ecological constraints. By conceptualizing development as a constrained feedback process rather than a linear trajectory from growth to welfare, the paper offers a framework for analyzing contemporary development challenges and for rethinking policy priorities beyond growth-centric metrics.
