The Toponymic Stratification of Quattrocento Umbria: A Philological and Historical Validation of 'Ameria' in Beinecke MS 408
Abstract
AbstractThis paper addresses the alleged toponymic anachronism of the term "Ameria" as identified in the decipherment of the Voynich Manuscript (Beinecke MS 408). Critics have argued that the medieval vernacular "Amelia" renders the classical "Ameria" an impossibility for a early 15th-century author. This study demonstrates that the rediscovery of Cicero’s Pro Roscio Amerino in 1414 by Poggio Bracciolini catalyzed a "toponymic restoration" among the Italian Humanist elite. By analyzing the stratification between vernacular administrative records and the prestige Latinity of the Respublica literaria, this paper validates "Ameria" as a culturally authentic identifier for the period of the manuscript’s origin (1404–1438).
