Topological Vacuum Energy from T³ Compactification: A Calculable Mechanism for the Cosmological Constant and Its Observational Signatures
Abstract
This work presents a novel theoretical framework in which the observed dark energy scale naturally emerges from the topological vacuum energy of Standard Model fields in a universe with compact toroidal (T^3) topology. Using Epstein zeta function regularization, we compute a dimensionless topological coefficient of approximately 0.021 from genus-1 spectral geometry. For a fundamental domain size of about 14.2 Gpc—within current observational bounds on cosmic topology—this yields a vacuum energy density on the order of 10^-123 times the Planck density, demonstrating that a geometric origin for the dark energy scale is quantitatively plausible. The framework generates several testable phenomenological signatures while transforming the conceptual landscape: instead of an inexplicably small dimensionless cosmological constant, the central parameter becomes the topological scale L—a physical length directly constrained by observations. Key predictions include: (1) a geometric cutoff suppressing CMB temperature anisotropies at large angular scales; (2) a redshift-dependent effective dark energy equation of state with a "topological freeze-out" transition; (3) characteristic modulations in large-scale structure; and (4) a low-frequency cutoff in the stochastic gravitational wave background. These correlated, quantitative predictions establish a direct link between cosmic topology and late-time cosmology, testable with upcoming data from Euclid, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, and next-generation CMB experiments.
