From Prompt to Manuscript: The Emergence of the AI-Mediated Research Article Generation Pipeline
Abstract
A distinct shift is observable at the frontier of scholarly practice: researchers are increasingly utilizing generative AI not merely as an editorial tool, but as the primary engine for drafting complete research manuscripts based on human-provided intellectual input. This paper identifies and analyzes two nascent pipelines constituting this workflow: (1) Query-to-Article Pipeline: A precise research question or hypothesis is posed to the AI, which then generates a structured draft containing arguments, formalizations, and synthesized literature. (2) Blueprint-to-Article Pipeline: A detailed conceptual blueprint (e.g., an outline, data findings, core claims) is provided, and the AI expands it into a cohesive, fully-fledged paper. We frame this as the industrialization of the articulation phase of research, where the human role concentrates on high-level intellectual architecture (problem definition, quality control, critical synthesis) while offloading the labor of initial textual construction. The paper systematically describes these pipelines, analyzes their asymmetric suitability across disciplines (e.g., theoretical vs. experimental), and delineates the profound normative, epistemic, and evaluative challenges they pose to academic ecosystems. Our aim is to provide a neutral, observational framework for a phenomenon that is already underway.
