Understanding the Self: DIGITAL SELF
Abstract
This module, Understanding the Self: Digital Self, examines how digital technologies and online platforms shape contemporary self-identity and self-presentation. It introduces learners to the concept of the digital self as an extension of personal identity formed through online interactions, digital footprints, and mediated communication. Drawing from sociological and psychological perspectives, the module highlights the fluid, performative, and fragmented nature of identity in the digital age. The module guides students to critically analyze how social media, digital platforms, and online environments influence behavior, values, and self-perception. Through reflective and performance-based activities such as the Digital Footprint Trail and the Digital Self-Portrait Collage, learners are encouraged to examine their own online practices, evaluate ethical implications related to privacy and authenticity, and develop responsible digital awareness. Aligned with the General Education curriculum, this module emphasizes critical thinking, self-reflection, and ethical engagement in digital spaces. It aims to help students become more conscious, reflective, and responsible participants in the digital world while fostering a balanced and authentic understanding of the self in both online and offline contexts.
