A Foundational Framework for Understanding the Universe and the Self
Abstract
This paper presents a foundational framework for understanding the universe and the self by distinguishing objective physical reality from the models used to represent it. The universe is defined as a mind independent, causally structured physical reality that constrains all empirical observation. Scientific theories are treated as axiomatic, homomorphic representations of empirical regularities rather than exhaustive descriptions of reality. Within this framework, the self is analyzed as a system level phenomenon, distinguishing empirical selves from axiomatic selves. The biological self is explained as an emergent feature of evolutionary processes understood in terms of sustainability under environmental constraints. The concept of an enlightenable self is introduced to characterize systems capable of constructing abstract models of reality and of themselves. The work is explicitly foundational and intended as a basis for further theoretical development.
