Continuity Between Prebiotic and Modern Membranes
Abstract
This conceptual text explores the continuity between prebiotic and modern biological membranes from a physical perspective. It argues that membranes should be understood not merely as historical artifacts of early evolution, but as enduring organizational principles that enable the formation of distinct internal environments. The emergence of membranes made it possible to limit exposure to free oxygen and to establish physicochemical conditions necessary for early metabolic processes.
