Abstract

The classification of computational problems into complexity classes, specifically Polynomial time ($P$) and Nondeterministic Polynomial time ($NP$), relies heavily on worst-case analysis$^1$. However, this binary classification is increasingly at odds with empirical reality. Modern SAT solvers routinely solve industrial instances with millions of variables—problems that theoretically should be intractable—in near-polynomial time$^3$. This discrepancy suggests that "natural" instances contain hidden structural flaws, or "backbones," that reduce the effective dimensionality of the search space. Current attempts to resolve the $P$ versus $NP$ question have faced significant barriers, notably the Relativization Barrier$^4$ and the Natural Proofs Barrier$^5$. These barriers imply that standard proof techniques, which treat the search space as a flat, uniform substrate, are insufficient. We posit that the missing variable is topological. Just as physical phase transitions are defined by the geometry of molecular arrangements, we argue that computational phase transitions are defined by the geometry of entropy within the decision tree.
