Reengineering the Legal Mind of the "Student, Lawyer, and Judge" in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: From Legal Text to Code
Abstract
Abstract : The global legal system is undergoing a profound epistemic transformation driven by the rapid integration of artificial intelligence technologies into judicial and legal frameworks. This transformation extends beyond procedural digitalization to fundamentally reshaping the structure of legal reasoning itself. The significance of this study lies in its treatment of artificial intelligence not merely as a technical tool, but as an epistemic actor influencing legal knowledge production, professional legal practice, and judicial decision-making. The research problem centers on the following core question: To what extent does the use of artificial intelligence contribute to re-engineering the legal mind, and what are the legal, ethical, and epistemological implications of this transformation for legal education, legal practice, and judicial deliberation? This question is further expanded to address issues of algorithmic accountability, judicial epistemic independence, and the preservation of fairness, transparency, and due process in AI-assisted justice. The study aims to develop an integrated theoretical and applied framework that explains the shift from traditional legal texts to legal data, analyzes its impact on legal education, legal practice, and judicial reasoning, and proposes a governance and ethical model that promotes the concept of responsible smart justice while balancing technological innovation with fundamental legal values. Methodologically, the research adopts a multidimensional approach, combining analytical methods to examine legal and technical concepts, comparative analysis of leading international experiences, and a structural approach to deconstruct the relationship between law and algorithms as knowledge-producing systems. The findings reveal that artificial intelligence is reshaping the legal mind from a text-centered interpretive model into a data-driven, structural-analytical model. The study also highlights that the absence of clear governance and ethical frameworks poses significant risks to transparency, accountability, and procedural justice, and that traditional legal education systems remain inadequately equipped to address this epistemic shift. The research concludes by recommending the integration of legal data literacy and algorithmic reasoning skills into legal education curricula, the establishment of comprehensive regulatory frameworks for AI governance in judicial systems, the reinforcement of human oversight and explainable AI mechanisms, and the development of a balanced Arab model of smart justice that draws on international best practices while respecting legal and cultural specificities.
