Adaptive Load on Membranes as a Consequence of Rapid Changes in the Physical Environment
Abstract
This conceptual essay introduces the notion of an adaptive load acting on biological membranes as a consequence of rapid changes in the physical environment. Building on the view of membranes as carriers of physical information, the text argues that modern conditions introduce novel physical inputs that interact with membrane structure and mechanics. Rather than invoking biochemical causation, the framework emphasizes changes in physical state variables such as membrane tension, curvature, lateral heterogeneity, and energetic thresholds.
