A Practice-Led Research Methodology for Contemporary Music Higher Education: A standards-oriented framework for supervising and assessing undergraduate practice-led research
Abstract
This white paper proposes a standards-oriented methodological framework for supervising and assessing undergraduate practice-led research in contemporary music higher education. It addresses recurring supervisory and examination challenges arising when artistic practice functions as the primary site of inquiry rather than as illustrative output. The framework clarifies key distinctions among methodology, method, and practice, and articulates how evidence may be generated, examined, and assessed without reliance on experimental or empirical research designs. Drawing on practice-led and reflective-practitioner research traditions, the paper outlines principles for research design, evidence identification, assessment alignment, moderation, and external examining. The document is non-empirical and design-based. It does not prescribe artistic outcomes, research topics, or stylistic approaches, but provides methodological clarity and assessment guidance aligned with UK- and Singapore-based higher education quality assurance contexts. It is intended for programme leaders, supervisors, examiners, and quality-assurance leads supporting undergraduate practice-led research.
