The Existence Threshold
Abstract
The Existence Threshold proposes a universal framework for understanding pattern persistence across binary discrete dynamical systems through the corrected formula Φ = R·S + D, representing a fundamental revision where disorder functions as a component of existence rather than its enemy. This version includes comprehensive experimental validation achieving perfect classification accuracy across ten cellular automata systems including Conway's Game of Life, Seeds, Day and Night, HighLife, and multiple one-dimensional and two-dimensional rule systems. Statistical analysis demonstrates nine of ten systems reach significance with p < 0.05 and effect sizes exceeding Cohen's d > 0.8, establishing clear boundaries between alive patterns maintaining Φ > 0 and dead patterns settling to Φ = 0. Domain boundary testing on continuous systems including logistic maps and high-dimensional neural networks reveals framework limitations, with accuracy dropping to 80-87% for continuous dynamics, confirming the framework specifically applies to binary discrete systems with well-defined state transitions. Supplementary materials provide complete implementation details including exact mathematical definitions for recursive information processing R, system integration S, and disorder D, enabling independent verification and replication of all reported results. Applications to neural consciousness and cosmological expansion remain preliminary hypotheses requiring future experimental validation beyond the validated domain of cellular automata and discrete dynamical systems. This work establishes testable predictions for pattern persistence in complexity science, self-organization, emergence, information theory, thermodynamics, and statistical mechanics while maintaining honest assessment of validated versus speculative applications.KEYWORDS:Existence Threshold, cellular automata, pattern persistence, binary discrete systems, self-organization, emergence, complexity science, information theory, system integration, thermodynamic entropy, Conway's Game of Life, dynamical systems, state transitions, reproducibility, implementation details, experimental validation, statistical significance, domain boundaries, consciousness hypothesis, cosmological expansion, dark energy mechanism, recursive processing, integrated information theory
