Abstract

Existence is not a gift; it is a metabolic labor. In a universe tending toward total chaos, the fact that you exist at all is a high-stakes thermodynamic victory. This paper introduces the Existence Threshold (Phi): the mathematical proof that consciousness is not a supernatural miracle, but a physical process that must be purchased, moment by moment, with energetic work. By bridging Landauer’s Principle with the 20-watt power budget of the human brain, this framework provides a definitive, scientific "floor" for existence. We move the study of the mind out of the realm of religious speculation and into the hard light of information thermodynamics. We reveal that "you" are a recursive pattern of integrated information—a pattern that must satisfy the Phi >= 0 equation or face immediate erasure. This principle scales from the microscopic to the cosmic. We propose that the mystery of Dark Energy is actually the universe’s own "persistence cost"—the energetic work required for the cosmos to maintain coherence against entropic dissolution. Providing testable predictions for anesthesia, AI intelligence, and cosmological evolution, this work replaces ancient myths with a unified theory of persistent reality. Existence is not a status bestowed upon us; it is a recursive resistance against the void.
