Minority Candidate Victory and Dynamics of Voter Behavior in the 2024 Semarang Mayoral Election
Abstract
Few minority candidates win in regional elections. Previous studies have suggested that being from a majority group and having a strong voter base are key factors in winning elections. This study aims to understand the dynamics of voter behavior toward triple minority candidates in the 2024 Semarang Mayoral Election. This phenomenon is interesting to investigate further because it demonstrates voter involvement in a political process involving candidates with multiple minority identities, including ethnicity, gender, and religion. Using descriptive qualitative methods, this study involved 30 informants with diverse social, economic, and educational backgrounds. The results indicate that voter behavior is shaped by a combination of sociological, psychological, and rational factors, with strong influences from the social context and the candidate's identity representation. Identity politics plays a significant role in shaping public perception of triple minority candidates, while credibility, emotional closeness, and rational programs strengthen voter support in determining their choice.
