Abstract

Engineered Identity Divergence (EID) occurs where a perpetrator exploits a mutually recognised difference between their own identity and that of the victim by offering false acknowledgment of the victim’s distinctiveness, strength, or uniqueness, while covertly redirecting that difference into a constructed identity aligned with the perpetrator’s interests. The victim retains a subjective sense of being unlike the perpetrator and unlike others, which obscures detection of control. However, the engineered identity progressively diverges from the victim’s authentic self, resulting in misalignment between internal values, emotional truth, and lived behaviour. EID does not erase identity. It intercepts and re-authors it. The harm arises not from collapse, but from displacement where the victim continues to function, endure, and appear autonomous while being subtly redirected away from their own internal governance.
