Abstract

Introduction: Faith Seeking Understanding at the Crossroads of East and WestThe Christian intellectual tradition has long been animated by the principle of fides quaerens intellectum—faith seeking understanding. First articulated by Augustine of Hippo as credo ut intelligam ("I believe in order that I may understand") and later crystallized by Anselm of Canterbury, this maxim posits that faith is not the end of inquiry but its beginning.1 It is a dynamic orientation of the soul, a loving and trusting commitment to divine revelation that propels the mind toward deeper comprehension of the mysteries it has embraced. This treatise stands firmly within that venerable tradition. It is an exercise in theological exploration, an attempt to allow the faith delivered by the Apostle Paul to seek a new and profound understanding of itself by entering into a dialogue with the rich spiritual grammar of the East.
