Abstract

This preprint introduces the concept of Pre-Branch, a structural phase that precedes the formation of judgment, appraisal, or evaluative choice. In many caregiving, educational, and support contexts, human responses are often interpreted as the results of intention or decision-making. However, repeated observations indicate the existence of situations in which such explanations do not adequately apply. Individuals may be unable to articulate reasons for their actions, and attempts at explanation or intervention may intensify confusion or rigidity rather than resolve it. Rather than treating these states as emotional immaturity or failures of self-control, this paper conceptualizes them as a condition-dependent phase in which the structural prerequisites for judgment have not yet been established. Pre-Branch is defined as a convergence of temporal, bodily, and environmental conditions that precede evaluative branching. At this phase, actions and reactions already occur, but the framework required to interpret them as outcomes of judgment is not yet available. To organize this antecedent structure, the paper situates Pre-Branch within the PIN framework (Process before Appraisal Network), which describes responses prior to appraisal formation in terms of interacting processes and conditions rather than internal traits or dispositions. Although anger and impulsive reactions are frequently used as illustrative examples, similar structures are observed in silence, avoidance, freezing, and shutdown. This paper does not propose diagnostic criteria or intervention techniques; instead, it offers a structural perspective for recognizing moments in which judgment-based explanation is premature.
