Indian observing facilities
Abstract
Stellar variability surveys are essential for probing the dynamic processes in stars, encompassing phenomena such as pulsations, eclipses, accretion events, and magnetic activity. Over the past few decades, India has developed a robust network of astronomical observatories that are making significant contributions to time-domain astrophysics. This talk will present an overview of the major Indian observing facilities—such as the Devasthal Observatory at Nainital, the Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO) in Hanle, the Vainu Bappu Observatory (VBO) in Kavalur, among others—focusing on their instrumentation, observational strategies, and survey capabilities in the context of stellar variability studies. We will explore how these facilities are enabling high-cadence photometric and spectroscopic monitoring, supporting long-term variability tracking, and participating in international time-domain collaborations.
