Impact of a psychiatric nursing curriculum on empathy and self-actualization of undergraduate nursing students in selected colleges of udaipur district, rajasthan
Abstract
The quality of mental health care delivered by future nurses is strongly influenced by the effectiveness of psychiatric nursing education during undergraduate training. Empathy and self-actualization are two core psychological attributes that shape nurses’ therapeutic relationships, ethical sensitivity, professional identity, and clinical competence in mental health settings. In recent years, nursing education in India has undergone curricular reforms aimed at strengthening psychiatric nursing competencies; however, limited empirical and conceptual attention has been given to how these curricula influence the inner psychological development of nursing students. This article examines the impact of a structured psychiatric nursing curriculum on empathy and self-actualization among undergraduate nursing students, with specific contextual relevance to nursing colleges in the Udaipur district of Rajasthan. Drawing on contemporary educational theory, nursing pedagogy, and mental health practice, the article explores how curriculum content, teaching–learning strategies, clinical exposure, reflective practices, and faculty mentorship contribute to students’ emotional growth and professional maturation. Eight conceptual figures and three summary tables are integrated to support understanding of curriculum mechanisms and outcomes. Evidence from the last decade is synthesized to highlight implications for curriculum planning, teaching strategies, and policy development in nursing education. The article concludes that a well-designed psychiatric nursing curriculum significantly enhances empathy and self-actualization, preparing undergraduate nurses in Udaipur district to deliver compassionate, ethical, and person-centered mental health care
