Pediatric and adult ostomy pouch systems for facilitating emptying of the colon and bladder with adhesive and disposable properties
Abstract
Ostomy pouch systems play a crucial role in the management of patients who undergo surgical diversion of the gastrointestinal or urinary tract due to congenital anomalies, malignancies, inflammatory conditions, trauma, or neurological disorders. Both pediatric and adult populations require ostomy pouches that effectively facilitate the collection and emptying of fecal or urinary output while maintaining skin integrity, comfort, and quality of life. Advances in biomedical materials and nursing care practices have led to the development of adhesive, disposable ostomy pouch systems that are safe, hygienic, and patient-friendly. This article provides a comprehensive review of pediatric and adult ostomy pouch systems, focusing on their design, functional components, adhesive mechanisms, disposable properties, and clinical applications in colostomy, ileostomy, and urostomy care. Special emphasis is placed on nursing responsibilities, patient education, prevention of complications, and psychosocial adaptation. Eight figures and three tables are integrated to support conceptual understanding. Evidence from the last ten years is synthesized to highlight best practices and emerging innovations in ostomy care.
