Abstract

Forests serve as guardians of sustainable livelihoods and form the foundation for socioeconomic development in rural India. It is estimated that approximately 275 million people in India depend on forest resources for their sustenance. Among the most significant economic products derived from forests are Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs), which constitute a vital livelihood source for millions of forest-dependent communities. However, their contribution to the economy remains largely unquantified, as more than 60 percent of NTFP production is locally consumed with limited documentation of value addition. NTFPs are derived from over 3,000 plant species in India and provide employment opportunities to millions of people residing within and beyond forest boundaries, serving as an alternative income source for rural populations. The accelerating impacts of climate change due to anthropogenic activities have significantly affected forest ecosystems, consequently reducing NTFP yields. Jharkhand, characterized by its plateau landscape interspersed with plains, has witnessed increasing frequency of extreme climatic events including erratic rainfall patterns and prolonged droughts, severely impacting the livelihoods of NTFP-dependent communities. This review examines the multifaceted role of NTFPs in Jharkhand, highlighting their significance as cultural heritage, their regional distribution patterns, and their potential as economic incentives for forest conservation. The study synthesizes existing literature to understand the intricate relationship between climate variability, land-use changes, and NTFP production among forest-dependent communities. It emphasizes the urgent need for comprehensive documentation, sustainable management strategies, and policy interventions to enhance NTFP output while ensuring livelihood security for tribal and rural populations in the face of changing climatic conditions.
