Spectrum of Possession by Evil: Development and Validation of a Theological Model and Assessment Instrument
Abstract
The Christian tradition has long recognized the reality of demonic possession and spiritual oppression, yet contemporary theological discourse lacks a comprehensive framework for understanding the gradations of evil's influence on human persons. This dissertation addresses the critical gap between binary conceptualizations of possession (possessed versus not possessed) and the complex spiritual realities encountered in pastoral ministry. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the Spectrum of Possession by Evil (SPE) model, a seven-level theoretical framework that conceptualizes demonic influence as existing along a continuum from ordinary sin to complete possession, and to create the SPE-70 assessment instrument for empirical measurement of placement along this spectrum. Employing a five-phase mixed-methods design integrating theological analysis, expert consultation, instrument development, psychometric validation, and cross-denominational review, this research engaged 847 participants across multiple validation studies. Results demonstrated exceptional psychometric properties for the SPE-70 instrument (Cronbach's α = .962), excellent model fit indices (CFI = .962, RMSEA = .028), and outstanding discriminant validity (AUC = .962). Cross-denominational theological review yielded strong acceptance ratings (4.20-4.68 on 5-point scales), and rigorous scriptural-theological validation confirmed the model's biblical and doctrinal foundations (4.47-4.73 ratings). This research makes significant contributions to theological anthropology, hamartiology, and demonology while providing validated practical tools for pastoral care, spiritual assessment, and deliverance ministry. The SPE model offers an ecumenical framework that bridges Reformed, Wesleyan, Catholic, and Pentecostal traditions, enabling more nuanced spiritual diagnosis and Christ-centered interventions across the spectrum of evil's influence.
