Abstract

Spark Ignition (SI) engines remain one of the most widely used power units in automobiles due to their smooth operation, quick response, and ease of fuel combustion. However, improving thermal efficiency and reducing fuel consumption continue to be major research challenges due to heat loss, incomplete combustion, and frictional resistance. This paper presents a detailed assessment of efficiency improvement techniques in SI engines through combustion optimization, alternative fuels, variable compression ratio systems, and advanced ignition technologies. Analytical review highlights the impact of air-fuel ratio control, exhaust gas recirculation, and thermal barrier coatings in minimizing energy loss and increasing brake thermal efficiency. The study also discusses modern trends including electronic fuel injection, lean burn strategies, and hybrid energy recovery to enhance performance while lowering emissions. Results indicate that integrated modifications in engine design, combustion strategy, and fuel composition can collectively improve overall efficiency by a significant margin. The findings provide a foundation for further experimental development towards cleaner and more economical SI engines.
