Abstract

The increasing complexity of global environmental challenges demands intelligent, data-driven solutions that can support sustainable decision-making. Machine Learning (ML), as a core component of artificial intelligence, offers powerful analytical capabilities to uncover patterns, optimize systems, and predict environmental outcomes. However, the technical and conceptual barriers associated with ML often limit its adoption among researchers and practitioners in environmental sciences. This study proposes a beginner-friendly framework that bridges this gap by simplifying the integration of ML into sustainability research and practice. Through a structured, five-phase learning cycle covering problem definition, data preparation, model selection, evaluation, and deployment, the framework enables accessible, reproducible, and context-driven applications of ML for environmental intelligence. The paper further explores diverse ML applications across environmental domains, including pollution modeling, water resource management, waste optimization, and renewable energy forecasting. It highlights how supervised, unsupervised, and deep learning methods contribute to intelligent environmental networks and sustainability transitions. Key challenges such as data scarcity, model interpretability, and ethical AI governance are also addressed, alongside emerging opportunities in Automated Machine Learning, explainable AI, and smart monitoring systems.By fostering inclusivity, collaboration, and ethical practice, this work advances the understanding of how ML can empower sustainable development. It serves as a guide for educators, researchers, and policymakers seeking to harness artificial intelligence as a catalyst for environmental intelligence and global resilience
