Abstract

This presentation examines the ethical governance of AI-enabled Extended Reality (XR) technologies in medical-related research, with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). It outlines how AI functions as a core enabler of modern XR applications in clinical care, training, and research, while systematically mapping associated risks, harms, and governance gaps, including limitations of existing regulatory frameworks such as the EU Medical Device Regulation. The presentation argues for context-sensitive, inclusive, and ethically robust oversight approaches to ensure that XR–AI innovations contribute to equitable and responsible global health research
