The Universal Mechanics of Learning: An Information-Theoretical Framework for Cosmological Structure
Abstract
This paper proposes that the universe operates as a self-organising information processing system, and traces the necessary emergence of structure from an initial state of undifferentiated potential. Beginning with the instability of nothing, we follow the logical sequence: distinction, recursion, pattern, memory, accumulation, shape, rate, matter, and scale. Each stage emerges necessarily from the previous. Building on Wheeler's "it from bit" hypothesis, Smolin's autodidactic universe, and Variable Speed of Light (VSL) cosmologies, we present a framework in which: (1) the fundamental operation of reality is distinction-making, (2) the speed of light represents the current information processing rate rather than a fixed constant, (3) this rate varies with information density and novelty, following an oscillating pattern around an increasing baseline, (4) dark matter represents unprocessed information potential, (5) particles are stable "knots" in an underlying relational substrate, (6) spiral structures reflect the geometry of optimal information accumulation, (7) the Riemann zeta zeros may correspond to resonance frequencies where information locks into stable structure, and (8) cosmic cycles evolve the universe's fundamental pattern. What appears as destruction is revealed as reorganisation toward greater coherence - the same event viewed from different positions in the system. We derive mathematical formulations, map predictions to observational signatures, and address objections from multiple physics perspectives.
