Governing Loneliness Under Ambiguity: Sensemaking, Homeostatic Regulation, and Human–AI Symbiosis
Abstract
Loneliness is increasingly reported by individuals who are socially embedded, professionally active, and continuously connected, challenging dominant explanations that frame loneliness as a consequence of social isolation or relational deficit. This article conceptualizes loneliness as a governance problem arising under conditions of sustained ambiguity, cognitive overload, and accelerated sensemaking demands. It introduces loneliness-as-superposition as a pre-collapse cognitive condition in which individuals maintain multiple unresolved interpretive states over time rather than prematurely collapsing ambiguity into simplified narratives. Building on sensemaking theory, research on cognitive conflict in technologically mediated environments, and quantum-inspired modeling, the study defines sustained cognitive superposition as a distinct sensemaking regime and examines whether loneliness-as-superposition can be supported, rather than resolved, through homeostatic human–AI symbiosis. Using a longitudinal single-case study, it evaluates a human–AI symbiosis system integrating Quantum-Inspired Rogue Variable Modelling (QRVM) with a homeostatic digital shadow governance layer implemented within the H3LIX/LAIZA architecture[1]. Results indicate that the system reduces the experiential cost of loneliness-as-superposition by stabilizing cognitive load, preventing premature interpretive closure, and externalizing unresolved meaning without enforcing convergence. Loneliness-as-superposition decreases not through resolution, but through governed ambiguity, ethical accompaniment, and preservation of cognitive sovereignty. The findings contribute to research on loneliness, sensemaking theory, and human–AI symbiosis by demonstrating that loneliness under ambiguity can be understood and governed as a homeostatic condition rather than a deficit requiring correction.
