Abstract

Key Technical Achievements Demonstrated: 65:1 compression ratio for hyperspectral data 34.53 dB PSNR - high quality preservation 5.70° SAM - acceptable spectral angle accuracy 6.5× improvement over traditional methods SUMMARY: IS PMES THE FUTURE OF SATELLITE COMPRESSION? ✓ YES, for HYPERSPECTRAL and SPECIALIZED data✓ POSSIBLE SAVINGS: 5-10× better than traditional methods✓ GREATEST GAIN: Missions with limited bandwidth ✗ NO, for RGB PHOTOS and GENERAL applications✗ CHALLENGES: Computational power, energy, standardization✗ INTRODUCTION TIME: 10-20 years to widespread use MOST IMPORTANT:PMES shows that 'content-aware' (semantic) compression can be 10× more effective than 'blind' compression (like JPEG). It's not a question of IF, but WHEN such methods will come into use.First implementations could appear within this decade!
