Abstract

January health resolutions often fail because goals are framed as prohibitions rather than actionable additions. Evidence from 2023 to 2025 shows that small, specific, and repeatable behaviours anchored to existing routines are more effective. Practical strategies include adding a short daily walk, consuming one extra serving of vegetables, maintaining a consistent wake time, and fostering social connections. Framing goals positively, tracking progress, and leveraging low-cost community or workplace support improves adherence. Simple, observable actions and accountability mechanisms transform fleeting resolutions into sustainable habits, reducing risks of hypertension, diabetes, and early mortality among Nigerians in 2026.
