Abstract

This paper presents a multidisciplinary interpretive framework for re-examining the Atlantis narrative as a civilizational–geological memory, arising from a genuine interaction between large-scale natural events (rapid coastal collapses, floods, and end-of-Ice-Age seismic activity) and mechanisms of mythological and religious encoding across cultures. The study is distinguished by its systematic integration of:Archaeological analysis of circular and megalithic sites (Rujm el-Hiri, Stonehenge, European cup-and-ring structures, and stone circles in the Arabian Peninsula).Geological and geomorphological analysis (the Richat Structure/Eye of the Sahara, Atlantic continental shelf collapses).Comparative textual analysis of philosophical texts (Plato’s dialogues), religious scriptures (the Qur’an and the Torah), and mythological traditions (Gilgamesh, Deucalion, Vedic texts, and Greek mythology).Cultural memory and eschatological studies, treated as mechanisms for re-narrating past catastrophes in the form of anticipated “ends of the world.”The paper advances a Unified Interpretive Model, arguing that:Atlantis should not necessarily be understood as a single, geographically fixed political entity;rather, it represents a symbolic core of global civilizational–geological collapse memory, projected into multiple traditions through locally adapted narratives (floods, wars of the gods, the fall of giants, divine punishment). The study demonstrates that the structural parallels among divine succession myths (Kumarbi/Teshub, Titans/Olympians, Devas/Asuras) and global flood and world-submergence traditions should not be interpreted as evidence of a single literal mythic event, but rather as indicators of the transmission of mythic motifs through ancient networks of cultural interaction linking the Near East, the Mediterranean basin, West Africa, and South Asia. The paper’s primary scholarly contributions lie in:liberating the concept of Atlantis from mythic literalism and geographical reductionism;proposing a testable model that integrates archaeology, geology, and textual traditions;opening a new research trajectory for understanding eschatology as an inverted temporal archive, in which past catastrophes are reframed as future expectations;contributing to broader studies of cultural memory, prehistory, and the philosophy of natural history. This study is addressed to scholars of archaeology, historical geology, comparative religion, philosophy of history, and myth studies, emphasizing that the proposed model is interpretive and analytical rather than speculative, and is intended to expand the scientific discourse on the relationship between catastrophe, memory, and myth.
