Abstract

Adaptive systems operate in stochastic, non-equilibrium environments characterized by uncertainty, fluctuations, and irreversible failure modes. Classical models of adaptation and decision-making typically frame behavior as the optimization of expected outcomes, implicitly assuming reversibility and compensability of losses. However, many biologi- cal, cognitive, and social systems encounter collapse boundaries—absorbing states from which recovery is impossible—rendering expected-value criteria insufficient for long-term persistence. Here we develop a collapse-aware framework for adaptive organization grounded in variance suppression under irreversible dynamics. Introducing a viability functional with absorbing boundaries, we show that survival probability is governed by first-passage statistics and higher-order properties of outcome distributions rather than by expected performance alone. From this principle, we derive a hierarchy of control architectures—including prediction, affective valuation, learning, reflexive meta-control, global self-modeling, and cultural constraint—each corresponding to the suppression of progressively higher orders of variance and entropy production. We formally demon- strate the limits of expected-value rationality under ruin, derive reflexive meta-control as a necessary mechanism for stabilizing learning-induced meta-variance, and charac- terize globally integrated self-modeling as an organizational response to system-wide instability. Minimal stochastic simulations confirm that control architectures prioritizing variance suppression achieve higher persistence than strategies that maximize expected outcomes. At the collective level, cultural norms and moral prohibitions emerge as externalized, entropy-constraining mechanisms that suppress population-level tail risk rather than optimize average utility. The proposed framework provides a unified, collapse-aware account of adaptive organization across scales, linking non-equilibrium thermodynamics, stochastic control, learning dynamics, consciousness, and cultural evolution, and yields testable predictions for biological systems, artificial intelligence, and social dynamics under irreversible uncertainty.
