Why There Is Something Rather Than Nothing: A Clarification of a Category Error
Abstract
This paper addresses the question “Why is there something rather than nothing?” by arguing that the question itself rests on a category error. The concept of “nothing” cannot be coherently specified or contrasted with “something” without implicitly reintroducing structure, reference, or distinction. As a result, the question cannot be meaningfully posed in the way it is traditionally framed. Rather than proposing a physical mechanism, metaphysical entity, or origin narrative, the paper clarifies the limits of the question itself. The analysis shows that attempts to answer the question fail not due to missing information
