The Contribution of Independent Cultural Ambassadors: Case Study on Promoting Romanian Culture Internationally (2023–2025)
Abstract
The global expansion of digital knowledge-sharing has reshaped how cultures are preserved, communicated, and understood internationally. Within this context, individual cultural ambassadors acting as independent researchers, creators, and digital storytellers are increasingly influential in shaping national cultural narratives beyond institutional frameworks. This case study examines the activities of Iyappan Santhosh Kumar (2023–2025) and his independent initiative, CulturaRomâniei.ro, which aims to present Romanian culture to international audiences. Drawing on digital ethnography, content analysis, and longitudinal documentation, the research evaluates a multi-year corpus of cultural outputs, including the seven-volume Discover Romanian Culture series, a bilingual eBook on Romanian identity, weekly cultural articles, short-form educational posts, and participation in cultural management workshops. These materials collectively offer a comprehensive digital representation of Romanian traditions, arts, history, spirituality, and diaspora experiences. The findings demonstrate that independent cultural ambassadors fill critical gaps often left by traditional institutions, particularly in rapid global communication, diaspora engagement, and freely accessible cultural education. Three major outcomes are identified: increased international visibility of Romanian culture among non-Romanian audiences, strengthened cultural identity within the Romanian diaspora, and the development of a scalable model for long-term cultural outreach through digital media. Despite challenges related to scalability, academic recognition, and limited resources, the study concludes that independent cultural ambassadors constitute a significant emerging force in cultural diplomacy. Their digitally driven, authentic, and sustained contributions can complement national strategies and enhance global appreciation of Romania’s cultural heritage.
