The Position of Iraqi Journals in Global Science Maps
Abstract
Despite the growing volume and scientific value of Iraqi academic publishing, Iraqi journals remain largely invisible within global scientific discovery and citation systems. This invisibility is not primarily caused by research quality, but by a structural absence from the core metadata-driven infrastructures that shape modern scholarly communication. Today, global science maps, citation graphs, and AI-based discovery platforms do not read articles as isolated PDF files. They operate on interconnected metadata networks built primarily on Crossref infrastructure, linking authors, institutions, funding bodies, references, publication status, and research outputs into machine-readable knowledge graphs. Most Iraqi journals use Crossref only to obtain DOI identifiers while neglecting full metadata deposition, ORCID and ROR integration, funding linkage, reference network construction, and Crossmark status signaling. As a result, Iraqi publications remain structurally disconnected from the global knowledge graph, limiting their visibility, discoverability, and citation potential regardless of research quality. This work documents the structural causes of Iraqi journals’ marginalization in global science maps, analyzes Crossref’s 2025 transition toward schema-driven record registration, and proposes a foundational roadmap for integrating Iraqi journals into the global scholarly knowledge infrastructure.
