REAL ECONOMIC METABOLISM
Abstract
This paper outlines a radical epistemological rupture in contemporary economic theory, proposing a shift from an economy based on abstract values and virtual credit to a "Real Economic Metabolism" founded on physical reality and thermodynamics. Modern economy is built on the illusion that value is a financial concept detached from physical constraints. However, recent systemic crises have empirically demonstrated that when virtual credit collapses, only physical assets (atoms) and energy transformation capacities remain. This work redefines economics not as a social science but as a biophysical science, introducing three fundamental pillars: 1. Economy as a Thermodynamic System GDP must not be measured in currency but in kilograms of transformed matter per year. The paper introduces Per Capita MEA (Materia Elaborata Annua) as the true metric of productive capacity, replacing abstract financial growth with physical mass flow analysis. 2. Real Value = Biophysical Transformation Capacity The value of an asset is determined not by fluctuating market prices or sentiment, but by its intrinsic biophysical capacity to generate measurable utility (e.g., energy generation, molecular transformation, biological complexity). A nuclear power plant's value is its invariant energy output (TeraWatts), not its depreciating market price. 3. Real Credit with Physical Collateral Credit must be backed by "Transferable Real Property Titles" on certified physical resources (uranium, rare earths, gold, cobalt). The paper proposes a legal mechanism implemented via Smart Contracts on Physical Assets, ensuring that if a debtor defaults, the creditor legally and automatically seizes the physical collateral through property transfer. This eliminates the risk of "virtual" insolvency. The REAME Matrix (Real Economy Assessment and Metabolic Evaluation) The paper formalizes the REAME matrix, replacing financial indices with five scalable physical metrics suitable for any territorial unit (from municipalities to nations): Per Capita MEA (Annual Processed Matter): Mass flow transformed per inhabitant (kg/capita/year). Per Capita EUT (Transformed Useful Energy): Real energy flow utilized for productivity per inhabitant (kWh/capita/year). PRC (Critical Resources Portfolio): Certified stocks of critical raw materials per unit of surface area. ICBG (Generated Biophysical Complexity): Real innovation measured in "biophysical units" (e.g., patents, new molecular structures) per inhabitant. IEC (Controlled Entropy): Thermodynamic recycling efficiency (percentage of waste reintegrated into closed cycles). Conclusion Finally, a model of "Real Keynesian Circular Economy" is proposed, utilizing atomic mapping of local resources to activate closed biophysical cycles. This ensures territorial productive sovereignty and systemic resilience against global financial market volatility, moving from a logic of speculation to one of physical preservation and transformation.
