Abstract

We are thrilled to announce the v1.0 release of the RDM Virtual Data Crate! This major update brings a complete architectural and aesthetic overhaul to the platform, transforming it into a highly polished, responsive, and infinitely customisable tool for educators. 🆕 New Features Dynamic Regex Validation: The FAIR validation logic is no longer hardcoded! We have introduced a dynamic rules.json configuration file, allowing institutions to easily define their own naming conventions, penalties, and error messages using Regular Expressions without touching any React code. URL-Based Scenario Loading: Instructors can now share direct links to specific scenarios (e.g., appending ?scenario=Genomics_Project to the URL). The application also seamlessly supports browser Back/Forward navigation. Modern Glassmorphic UI: The interface has been completely redesigned. The "Modern" theme now features premium frosted glass effects (backdrop-filter), layered drop shadows, and sleek radial gradients. Rich Micro-Animations: Added fluid CSS key frame animations across the app. Menus fade in, file items respond to hover states, and drag-and-drop actions feature a custom visual pulse to make the interface feel alive. Responsive Mobile Layout: The application is now fully responsive. The sidebar automatically collapses into a slide-out drawer on smaller screens, allowing the crate to be used on tablets and mobile devices. React Portals Integration: Completely re-architected the custom right-click Context Menus to use React Portals, rendering them directly to the DOM root. This guarantees pixel-perfect positioning and eliminates any browser clipping bugs. CSS Modules Migration: Replaced messy inline styles with scoped CSS Modules for a cleaner, highly maintainable, and easily theme-able codebase. 🧬 Upgraded Scenario Engine You are no longer limited to a single dataset! The filenames_org.csv engine has been upgraded to support multiple scenarios in a single file. By simply separating datasets with a > ScenarioName header, educators can bundle multiple disciplines (e.g., Genomics, Social Sciences, Imaging) into one deployment, and link directly to them. 🛠️ Automated Deployment Deploying the Virtual Data Crate is now a zero-touch process. Fork this repository. The integrated GitHub Actions workflow will automatically build your customised application behind the scenes. Enable GitHub Pages in your repository settings (Source: gh-pages branch). The tool will be live at https:// .github.io/rdm-virtual-data-crate/. ⚙️ White-Label Customisation Institutions can fully brand and tailor this tool by editing a few simple files in src/: src/assets/rules.json: Enforce your specific institutional naming conventions via Regex. src/assets/info.md: Update sidebar instructions and add university branding. src/assets/filenames_org.csv: Swap out or add your own "data horror stories". src/index.css: Quickly adjust CSS variables to match your university's colour palette. 📄 License This work is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later.
