Abstract

Abstract Polish reception of Osip Mandelstam (192?-202?) – problems and challenges. The first, hitherto unknown translation of Mandelstam’s poem into Polish In the article a reflection on polish reception of Osip Mandelstam’s life and his oeuvre is presented as well as thoughts on hardships that the researcher focusing on this subject has to overcome. One of the most important problems that needs to be solved is the determination of the research time framework. Up until now, it was believed, according to Piotr Mitzner’s research, that the year 1925 is the initial caesura. However, a year before that date a hitherto unknown translation of one of Mandelstam’s poems was published in ‘Wiadomości Literackie’. A translation of Tristia is the first translation attempt that has been published in Polish and is the first translation of Mandelstam’s poem into foreign language as well.Another possible timeframe could be assigned in such a way that the research would comprehend one hundred years of Mandelstam’s presence in Polish language. In the article the discussion of investigation results on Polish publications pondering on references to Mandelstam’s life and works is included. Up until now research does not portray this problem in the most complex and comprehensive way. It is rather a segment of the broader view aimed at showing the full scope of this problem. Moreover, a postulate to ponder on those threads of Mandelstam’s reception that are connected with references to classicism and Jewish identity is put forward. They are extremely important especially when it comes to subsequent works when Mandelstam was not read in political terms anymore. Researchers focused on those aspects of the Russian writer reception less because they analysed works written in the 70s and 80s more often. At that time a myth of Mandelstam as a martyr for freedom was strongly present. An analysis of poetry written after the 80s requires not only references to Mandelstam’s works but also the myth of his life.
