Abstract

In order to reduce DC-link capacitor current ripple, increase system reliability, and prolong capacitor lifetime, this paper proposes an Enhanced Model Predictive Control (E-MPC) scheme for five-phase induction motor(5-phase IM) drives. Conventional Finite Control Set MPC (FCS–MPC) frequently causes large neutral-pointvoltage imbalance and high switching ripple, which raises capacitor stress and decreases the drive’s long-termstability. To minimize ripple without sacrificing torque dynamics, the suggested E-MPC incorporates an enhanced multi-objective cost function, optimized discrete-time motor model, adaptive weighting mechanism, andcapacitor current prediction. For the five-phase IM, a comprehensive modeling framework comprising electrical, mechanical, and discrete predictive formulations is created. The superior performance of the proposed controller is confirmed byextensive simulations, which show a 23% lower switching frequency, a 38–52% reduction in DC-link capacitorcurrent peak-to-peak ripple, and an improved electromagnetic torque smoothness when compared to conventional FCS–MPC. The findings demonstrate that E-MPC greatly improves drive performance, which makes itideal for high-power industrial and electric vehicle applications.
